In conversation with Guiseppe Dell'Anno

Friday 20th November 2026

£55.00

Join us in the Orchard Room for an afternoon with Giuseppe Dell’Anno, winner of The Great British Bake Off 2021 and the first Italian baker to take the title. Welcomed with a glass of fizz, you will hear Giuseppe talk about the Italian baking tradition he grew up in, his unlikely route from engineering to the Bake Off tent, and the family recipes he is determined to share. The afternoon is styled as an Italian afternoon tea, and each bake you taste is tied to a story from the conversation. There will be time for your questions, a tasting session with tea and coffee, and a little something to take home.

Please note, this is a half-day event. This event is strictly for those 18 years and over.

About the afternoon

This is an afternoon of conversation and tasting, built around an Italian take on afternoon tea. Rather than a formal talk followed by refreshments, the food is part of the discussion: Giuseppe has chosen a selection of traditional Italian bakes, and the conversation is shaped around them.

You will be welcomed with a glass of fizz. As the conversation unfolds, Giuseppe will introduce each sweet treat in turn, explaining where it comes from in the Italian baking tradition, what it meant in his own family, and the technique behind it. Expect stories from his father’s kitchen, from the Bake Off tent, and from an engineer’s very precise approach to getting a bake right.

After questions from the audience, the tasting session continues with tea and coffee and a selection of Italian biscuits made to go with them. Before you leave, there will be a small parting gift of bakes to take home.

About Giuseppe Dell’Anno

Giuseppe grew up in Italy among passionate food lovers and professional bakers, in a family where food was always the main topic of conversation. That knowledge felt so much like second nature that he never thought of it as a skill. Instead, he studied chemical engineering at Pisa University, then moved to the UK in his mid-twenties for a doctorate in composite materials and a research career in academia and industry.

As an engineer, he “baked” composite aeroplane wings and landing gear in very large ovens, before turning to the more flavoursome kind of baking. The engineer has never quite left: he admits he can hardly bake without a set of rulers and a spirit level.

Most of his baking he learned informally from his father, a professional chef who showed his love for family and friends through carefully prepared food and expertly decorated cakes. It is this heritage that Giuseppe now shares as widely as he can.
