Table of Contents

Recipient of multiple accolades, illustrator and designer Rory Hutton has designed numerous silk scarves for esteemed UK arts and heritage institutions, including the Royal Collection Trust and the Victoria & Albert Museum. His luxurious collections, often featuring vivid linocuts and striking block designs, are a testament to his ardour for beauty and creativity.

After five years studying fashion design in Ireland, Rory moved to London to pursue his creative ambitions and immersed himself in the city’s rich cultural landscape. In 2013, he established Rory Hutton Limited, which sells a range of luxury silk scarves, shawls, and prints, and continues collaborating with some of the UK’s most respected cultural institutions.

Since 2023, Rory has produced a range of designs for Highgrove, from the Coronation of His Majesty King Charles III to launching the Highgrove Shop at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show; his designs always celebrate the beauty and diversity of Highgrove Gardens.

    The design process

Rory’s design process begins with research and sketching, followed by creating handcrafted lino cuts in his studio in Cambridge, UK, that form the foundation of each design. He develops the narrative of the pattern on paper before it is printed onto luxury 100% silk in the selected colourway. Each scarf is finished by hand.

“Like gardening, linocut is a slow, tactile craft: meditative in process and joyful in result” – Rory Hutton.

Highgrove Celebrated: Gardening in Silk and Linocut

Launching at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show in 2025, the Highgrove Celebrated silk scarf is the latest addition to Rory’s collaborative collection with Highgrove. Available in pink and green, this richly detailed new design captures the spirit and splendour of His Majesty’s gardens at Highgrove. It is Rory’s most ambitious garden scarf, drawing on years of botanical fascination and his signature linocut process to create something elegant and evocative.

“The Highgrove Celebrated Scarf is, in many ways, the culmination of years spent cultivating my own artistic garden — one that stretches across silk and lino, history and hope. I hope it brings joy to wear, and perhaps even a moment of stillness in a busy world — just as a real garden would” – Rory Hutton.

The elegant classical northeast front of Highgrove House is at the centre of the design, framed by blooming roses and a scrolling banner. Surrounding it are eight areas of Highgrove Gardens, including the StumperySundial GardenCottage Garden, Carpet Garden, Oak Pavilion, Thyme WalkMeadow, and Kitchen Garden.

Every element — from garden tools to the delphiniums and ferns — was hand-created in Rory’s Cambridge studio.

    Highgrove Exclusive Coronation Silk Scarf

Exclusively available at Highgrove, this scarf was one of three coronation designs commissioned by Rory to celebrate the Coronation of His Majesty The King Charles III in 2023, the others being Westminster Abbey and the National Portrait Gallery. The scarf was the first design created by Rory to be sold at Highgrove, marking the beginning of a wonderful new relationship. Inspired by the gardens at Highgrove, the design features motifs such as delphiniums, ferns, and elegantly clipped topiaries. It is also the only one of the three scarves that includes the royal cyphers of Their Majesties King Charles III and Queen Camilla.

Highgrove Meadow: Celebrating Highgrove at the Chelsea Flower Show 2024

This exclusive design honoured Highgrove’s participation at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show in 2024. Beautifully decorated with a vibrant array of wildflowers, butterflies, dragonflies, bees, and beehives, each element is meticulously handcrafted in linocut to capture the natural beauty of Highgrove’s meadows. It is a testament to nature’s splendour, available in two stunning colourways on a silk scarf and as a tote bag.

The sale of highgrove products, garden tours and events support the charitable work of the kings foundation.
