Johnstons of Elgin: Highgrove Heritage Scarves and Throw

Table of Contents

Established in 1797, Johnstons of Elgin’s rich Scottish heritage, combined with their unrivalled passion for innovation and superb craftsmanship, inspire their luxurious cashmere and fine wool collections.

The UK’s largest producer of luxury cashmere and fine woollens, Alexander Johnston established the business in 1797 at Newmill Elgin on the banks of the River Lossie. The Mill at Elgin continues to produce the finest woollen garments, including cashmere, to this day.

Johnstons carries out the processes of dyeing, spinning, weaving, and finishing on one site at their Elgin Mill, thus making it the only vertical mill in Scotland.

Having supplied to Highgrove Gardens for over five years and after a record sell-out of the original Heritage Scarf, Johnstons of Elgin, along with Highgrove Gardens, are pleased to introduce three new additions to the Highgrove Heritage Collection, including two new colourways for the Heritage Scarf and a sumptuously soft throw in the original honey-toned style.

The natural Merino Wool fibres used to create these pieces can be traced from the farm to the finished product. Johnstons of Elgin will donate 10% of retail sales from the collection to The King’s Foundation, which is dedicated to creating communities for a more sustainable world.

WORKING WITH THE WORLD'S FINEST, NATURAL FIBRES FOR MORE THAN 226 YEARS

Johnston’s of Elgin takes pride in the time it takes to create their luxurious, high-quality designs, and their products are made to last for more than a lifetime whilst using natural, renewable, biodegradable fibres.

With over two centuries of experience, Johnstons have honed their expertise in handling the delicate Cashmere and Merino Wool fibres. Their Elgin and Hawick mills, both family-owned, are a testament to their enduring commitment to quality. The Elgin mill allows them to oversee every step of the production process, from dyeing to finishing. They strike a perfect balance between traditional approaches and innovative technology, exceptional design, and unparalleled craftsmanship to create beautiful products, all made in Scotland.

    A NOD TO NATURE

The Highgrove Heritage Scarf was first launched in 2021 to coincide with the 11th year of Campaign for Wool, which His Majesty King Charles III is patron of, and COP26. Working closely with Johnstons of Elgin, we were keen to weave elements of nature into the heart of the Heritage scarf design.

The iconic Prince of Wales check was placed over an enlarged Shepherd check to provide an aesthetic that celebrates the history of traditional checks and tweeds. The Shepherd Check is the foundation of all checks, originally coloured from undyed wool using the black, dark browns, and whites from the wool clip and woven into shawls worn by the Border shepherds. The next of the original checks was the Prince of Wales Check, created by King Edward VII during his time in Scotland as Prince of Wales.

The Highgrove Heritage Scarf is a modern interpretation of these historical designs. The new Limited Edition scarves are based on the original Highgrove Heritage pattern and are available in grey with black and grey with green.
